Centrul Universitar de Geografie Umană şi Amenajarea Teritoriilor CUGUAT-TIGRIS http://www.cuguat-tigris.ro/
The activity within CUGUAT-Tigris is structured on the fundamental field of geosciences, favoring several clearly shaped axes: territorial organization and planning, regional development, spatial dynamics of productive structures and habitat, globalization, internationalization and Europeanization, political and social geography. The scientific activity of Cuguat-TIGRIS does not only have an applied but also a strong formative character by means of the research programs the PhD and master students are integrated in and the training activities developed through the ESPON program and PCER – the Romanian ESPON Contact Point.
The University Centre for Human Geography and Land Planning (C.U.G.U.A.T.) within the Geography Department of University “Al. I. Cuza” of Iasi was acknowledged by CNCSIS as a C-type Research Centre in 2001. Due to its dynamic evolution, in 2005 CNCSIS accredited it as an excellence centre.
Starting with the year 2005 C.U.G.U.A.T. became Cuguat-TIGRIS (University Centre for Human Geography and Land Planning. Innovative Territories – Regional Management and Spatial Interaction) – the name under which it has asserted itself in the national and especially international scientific network - within the ESPON program promoted by DG REGIO (Directorate General for Regional Policy of the European Union). Its activity within this gigantic project of shaping an European system of territorial monitoring allowed Cuguat-TIGRIS to become PCER (the Romanian ESPON Contact Point) www.esponromania.ro.
The European integration of Cuguat-TIGRIS was accomplished by taking part in international consortia involved in research programs within FP 7 (EuroBroadMap), ESPON 2006, ESPON 2013, INTERREG (CADSES) or for different European institutions (the European Parliament, the European Commission).
On the national level, Cuguat-TIGRIS intended to continually combine fundamental (especially through CNCSIS projects www.cncsis.ro) and applied research, playing the role of an active partner for the central (the Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism - http://www.mdrl.ro/_documente/atlas/index.htm), regional and local authorities.
